Achieving Strict Grain Cleanliness Standards After Pet Coke & Cement Cargoes on MV AQUAGEMINI

In the competitive global dry bulk shipping market, minimize off-hire time and eliminate the risk of hold rejection during strict port inspections. Preparing a bulk carrier's holds within tight turnaround times requires specialized expertise, technical precision, and dynamic execution—especially when dealing with highly contaminating consecutive cargoes like petroleum coke (pet coke) and bulk cement.
Delta Maritime Agency recently completed a critical cargo hold preparation contract on the bulk carrier MV AQUAGEMINI (60,238 DWT, 5 cargo holds/hatches, 69,356 cbm capacity) en route from Veracruz, Mexico, to New Orleans, USA.

The Challenge: Drastic Cargo Transition Under Tight Steaming Windows

Transitioning a large bulk vessel from heavily staining pet coke and adhesive cement residues to a pristine grain in bulk readiness level is one of the most demanding tasks in maritime vessel maintenance. Given the short steaming window across the Gulf of Mexico, the ship’s crew alone could not safely or effectively complete the deep cleaning, descaling, and chemical treatments required to meet international agricultural shipping regulations.

The Solution: Delta Maritime's Comprehensive Cargo Hold Cleaning Plan

To ensure an unconditional pass upon arrival, Delta Maritime Agency mobilized an elite, certified technical riding team to implement a structured, multi-stage cargo hold cleaning plan en route:
  1. Targeted Chemical Application: Application of specialized Marichem P.C.S. chemical agents on all bulkhead and hopper surfaces showing heavy carbon and petroleum contamination.
  2. High-Volume Washout: Thorough chemical washout to break down bonded cement film and ingrained pet coke dust.
  3. High-Pressure (HP) Hydroblasting: Deep surface preparation utilizing high-pressure hydro-blasting equipment on highly contaminated areas, framing structures, and hard-to-reach upper bulkheads.
  4. Freshwater Rinsing & Bilge Dryout: Complete freshwater rinsing of all 5 holds and hatches to prevent salt crystallization, followed by detailed cleaning of bilge wells and comprehensive hot-air drying.
  5. Precision Spot Painting: Cosmetic restoration and spot painting of frames, hoppers, and upper bulkheads exhibiting transferable stains, burned marks, or flash rust.

The Result: Zero Remarks from the National Cargo Bureau (NCB)

Thanks to continuous 24/7 operations by our high-altitude certified climbing teams, the MV AQUAGEMINI reached the Mississippi River pilot boarding ground in immaculate condition. The rigorous National Cargo Bureau (NCB) hold inspection was passed seamlessly on the very first attempt with zero remarks, allowing the vessel to proceed directly to loading without a single minute of costly delay.
