The Route: Discharging bulk rock phosphate in the Mexican port of Coatzacoalcos, then immediately sailing to New Orleans to load bulk grain.
The Hidden Complication: While cleaning up standard phosphate residues is normally straightforward, the vessel had carried a heavy cement cargo prior to the phosphate.
The Problem: The ship’s crew lacked the time or necessary technical equipment to properly strip the cement before the phosphate was loaded. As a result, layers of hardened cement of varying thicknesses were bound across virtually all hold surfaces including the hoppers, the inner side of the frames, the underside of cross-decks, and the topside tank plating.

Initial Phosphate Washout: Stripping away the loose bulk rock phosphate layers to lay bare the underlying cement contamination.
Chemical Application (Cement Remover): Spraying specialized acid-based marine cement removers across all bulkheads, frames, and high-altitude areas to dissolve the structural bond of the hardened crust.
High-Pressure (HP) Cleaning: Deploying heavy-duty high-pressure machines to break loose and wash down the dissolved cement residues from hard-to-reach areas.
Freshwater (FW) Rinsing & Drying: A thorough freshwater rinse across all 5 holds and hatches to completely clear out chemical trace elements and corrosive sea salt, followed by deep bilge well cleaning and forced drying.
Spot Painting & Maintenance: Scraping minor rust and applying spot coats to the upper parts of bulkheads, hoppers, and in-between frames to shield the metal and safeguard the incoming grain cargo.
