Transforming MV S-BRAND from Pet Coke to Premium Wheat Standard En Route from Rotterdam to Rostock

Transitioning a dry cargo vessel from a highly contaminating, oily substance like petroleum coke (petcoke) to a sensitive agricultural commodity like wheat leaves absolutely zero room for error. Petcoke leaves behind a stubborn, sticky carbon film and greasy residues that tightly bond to the steel bulkheads, frame corners, and under-deck structures. If any traces or stains remain, the subsequent surveyor inspection will fail immediately, triggering catastrophic port delays, off-hire claims, and scheduling disruptions.
For the handysize bulk carrier MV S-BRAND (5 holds, 33,745 DWT, 44,399 cubic meters), efficiency and timing were everything. To bypass intermediate anchoring downtime and ensure the vessel was ready to load the moment she hit the berth, the operators appointed Delta Maritime Agency to deploy a specialized riding team to manage the entire hold cleaning en route from port to port.

Overcoming Sticky Pet Coke Film with Advanced Chemical Treatment

The voyage across the North and Baltic Seas from Rotterdam, Netherlands, to Rostock, Germany, provided a highly demanding operational window. Standard water-only holds washing is completely ineffective against petcoke residues because water cannot break down the oily, hydrocarbon-based films.
To overcome this, Delta Maritime Agency's professional hold cleaning team deployed an aggressive, multi-layered chemical extraction process. Our team systematically scaled the internal framework of the 5 cargo holds, applying specialized, heavy-duty petcoke cleaner emulsifiers. The chemical formulas were left to react dynamically with the surfaces to safely dissolve the cohesive bond of the oily soot before mechanical rinsing began.

Technical Holds Maintenance: Our Standardized 5-Stage Framework

To guarantee a spotless, "grain-clean" finish, our seagoing crew executed our rigorous 5-stage holds maintenance and treatment protocol:
  1. Dry Cleaning & Intensive Manual Sweeping: Thorough manual sweeping and lifting of all loose petcoke fragments and big/small fractions from the tank tops, hoppers, and lower framing structures.
  2. Targeted Pet Coke Chemical Application: Even application of specialized petcoke cleaner chemicals across all internal bulkheads and deep structural stiffeners to deeply emulsify the stubborn carbon film.
  3. Thorough Washout: High-volume marine washing to thoroughly rinse away the emulsified chemicals and dislodged oily residues from the upper bulkheads down to the tank top.
  4. Industrial High-Pressure Machine Cleaning: Deep mechanical scrubbing of highly contaminated areas, corrugations, and bracket configurations utilizing specialized high-pressure (HP) washing equipment with rotary nozzles.
  5. Freshwater Rinsing & Complete Drying: A meticulous final fresh water (FW) rinse across all 5 holds and upper hatch structures to completely eliminate salt and mineral deposits. The bilge wells were thoroughly flushed, cleared of debris, and vacuumed, followed by a complete drying of the tank tops to ensure a pristine environment for the incoming wheat cargo.

Flawless Inspection Pass: Eliminating Operational Risks at Sea

By operating around the clock in structured 24/7 rotations throughout the transit voyage, our riding team completely restored all 44,399 cubic meters of internal space. When the MV S-BRAND arrived at the loading berth in Rostock, Germany, the cargo holds underwent a strict independent inspection and passed flawlessly on the very first attempt.
