Preparing MV SUNRISE JADE for Premium NPK Cargo en Route from Poland to Norway

When transitioning a large bulk carrier from a dirty cargo like coal to a sensitive, high-purity cargo like NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizer), the margin for error is zero. Any remaining coal dust can cross-contaminate the fertilizer, leading to cargo rejection, severe commercial claims, and charter party disputes.
For the modern bulk carrier MV SUNRISE JADE (5 holds, 63,244 DWT), the task was made more complex by a tight transit schedule. To ensure the vessel was ready to load immediately upon arrival without losing valuable time in port, Delta Maritime Agency mobilized its expert riding team to perform complete cargo hold preparation en route from port to port.

Overcoming High-Altitude Structural Challenges

Coal dust is notorious for settling in the most inaccessible areas of a vessel's superstructure. On the MV SUNRISE JADE, despite the cargo line sitting at a distance of about 13 to 15 meters, intensive post-discharge inspections revealed significant coal cargo residues tightly clinging to the upper regions. This included under-deck spaces, the upper stool of bulkheads, and the hatch coamings.
Standard cleaning methods often fail to reach these heights safely and effectively. Delta Maritime Agency solved this by deploying a specialized professional hold cleaning team equipped with heavy-duty alpine climbing gear and specialized long-reach equipment.
By initiating the cleanup immediately with the first available hold right after discharging in Gdansk, Poland, our team established a rolling workflow. By the time the vessel departed the port, three out of the five massive holds were already fully cleaned.

Our Systematic 5-Stage Holds Maintenance & Cleaning Plan

To guarantee a spotless finish while navigating the Baltic and North Seas toward Heroya, Norway, our team meticulously executed a field-proven 5-stage cleaning protocol:
  1. Dry Cleaning & Manual Sweeping: The critical first step involved thorough manual sweeping and lifting of all loose coal residues of both small and large fractions from the tank tops, hoppers, and corrugations.
  2. Targeted Chemical Application: Our team applied a precise concentration of premium chemical cleaning agents (Marichem P.C.S.) across all bulkhead surfaces, targeting hidden soot and stubborn coal films.
  3. Thorough Washout: High-volume marine washing systems were used to completely rinse out the reacted chemicals along with the dissolved coal residues.
  4. Industrial HP Machine Cleaning: Highly contaminated areas, structural brackets, and the main tank top were deeply scrub yard-by-yard using specialized high-pressure (HP) washing machines.
  5. Freshwater Rinsing & Complete Drying: To ensure a perfect environment for the incoming NPK cargo, a final freshwater (FW) rinse was performed across all holds and upper hatches. The bilge wells were thoroughly cleaned, flushed, and the tank tops dried completely.

Seamless Port Pass: Eliminating Operational Risks at Sea

By handling the intensive holds washing and structural holds maintenance 24/7 during the sea voyage, Delta Maritime Agency saved the vessel operator multiple days of expensive port delays or anchoring fees. Upon arrival at the loading berth in Heroya, Norway, all 5 cargo holds passed the strict cleanliness inspection flawlessly on the first attempt.
Relying purely on a standard ship's crew during a short, high-stress transit can put your fixtures at risk. Trust your fleet's efficiency to a certified professional hold cleaning team. Contact Delta Maritime Agency today to coordinate your next en-route hold preparation.
