Fast-Track Black Sea Hold Preparation on Board MV MARIO from Erdemir to Constanta

Fast-Track Black Sea Hold Preparation on Board MV MARIO from Erdemir to Constanta

In modern dry bulk shipping, keeping vessel turnaround times minimal during localized regional transits is key to maximizing profitability. For the large Kamsarmax bulk carrier MV MARIO (7 holds, 81,606 DWT, 96,490 cubic meters), Delta Maritime Agency was tasked with a fast-track cargo transition right in our home waters of the Black Sea.
The ship needed to rapidly transition from carrying a dirty bulk coal cargo to achieving a strict international grain cleanliness standard to load sunflower seeds (SFS) in bulk. The short transit voyage from the discharging port of Erdemir, Turkey, to the loading hub of Constanta, Romania, demanded that the extensive cargo hold preparation be completed flawlessly while at sea to bypass costly intermediate anchorages or re-inspection fees.
To guarantee an absolute pass on arrival, our specialized riding team was mobilized to handle the technical execution en route from port to port.

High-Altitude Cleaning and Technical Detailing at Sea

Historically, heavy-bulk shipments of bauxites, iron ore, and coal have comprised a massive portion of localized port calls across regional hubs like Chornomorsk, Pivdennyi, and Dneprobugsky. Coal cargo leaves behind a persistent carbon film and fine soot that blankets lower hoppers, framing corrugations, and upper under-deck structures.
To process 7 massive hatches totaling over 96,000 cubic meters under a tight short-sea sailing schedule, our certified professional high altitude cleaners scaled the internal steel framework using industrial climbing rigging. Working safely at extreme vertical heights, our professional hold cleaning team deployed chemical sprayers and specialized mechanical extensions to break down the carbon soot film across the bulkheads before executing pressure washouts.

Our Standardized 5-Stage Holds Maintenance Framework

To ensure that every hold met strict independent agricultural survey requirements, our seagoing crew meticulously executed our field-proven protocol:
  1. Targeted Chemical Application: Smooth, systemic application of premium chemical cleaning emulsifiers (sodium hypochlorite) directly onto all bulkheads to dissolve the sticky hydrocarbon film left by the bulk coal.
  2. Comprehensive Washout: High-volume marine holds washing using high-pressure sea-water systems to thoroughly rinse away the emulsified chemicals and dislodged coal residues.
  3. Industrial High-Pressure Cleaning: Targeted mechanical scrubbing of highly contaminated lower framing regions, bracket configurations, hoppers, and the main tank top using industrial high-pressure (HP) washing equipment with rotary nozzles.
  4. Freshwater Rinsing & Complete Drying: A meticulous final fresh water (FW) rinse across all 7 holds and upper hatch structures to eliminate salt deposits. The bilge wells were thoroughly flushed, cleared of loose debris, and vacuumed, followed by total drying of the tank tops.
  5. Technical Spot Painting: Because historical traces of previous cement and clinker cargo residues were identified at the upper parts of the bulkheads, our team utilized high-altitude lines to perform precision spot-painting in-between the frames, completely sealing the old contamination away to secure a flawless "glove test".

Streamlined Port Entrance: Turning Inspections into a Formality

Operating around the clock in structured 24/7 rotations across the Black Sea, our crew successfully restored the entirety of the internal volume. When the MV MARIO arrived at the loading port of Constanta, Romania, the cargo holds underwent a rigid independent inspection and passed flawlessly on the very first attempt. Loading operations for the sunflower seeds commenced immediately upon berthing, protecting the charter fixture and maximizing vessel efficiency.
Relying on a standard ship's crew during high-stakes, short-voyage transits puts your business at risk of expensive re-inspections and off-hire claims. Entrust your fleet's holds maintenance and technical preparation to certified specialists.
